THE APRIL 1st 2020 HEALTHCARE FUNDING CUTS - HOW THIS AFFECTS YOU

            March 3, 2020

To our valued patients and their families,

As your family doctors, we treasure the relationship that we have built with our patients over the years, but in light of Health Minister Shandro’s unprecedented cuts to family medicine, we are being forced to make some tough choices in order to keep serving you.

Due to Minister Shandro’s proposed cuts, as of April 1, we will have to change how we deliver our medical services to you. These changes will likely include:

            • routine visits will be booked for 10 minutes, therefore we may need additional appointment to address all of your concerns
            • prescription refills will not be issued via phone or fax
            • appointments will be needed in order to review results
            • seniors will now be charged for driver’s medicals as this is no longer covered
            • enforcing charges for uninsured services such as sick notes, forms, letters for insurance, etc.

The Alberta Medical Association (AMA) and the medical profession understand the hard economic realities in Alberta, and we have worked hard to provide solutions that do not compromise medical care. At the time that these cuts were announced, the AMA had found solutions to cover 75% of the savings the government required, and had another proposal on the way. In addition, the AMA proposed to go to arbitration to find a solution that was acceptable to both sides.

Despite this, the government is moving forward with their proposed cuts, without consultation or negotiation with the medical profession. These cuts focus on family medicine, rural medicine and the ability to spend more time with patients.

We ask for your support in calling on your elected officials to return to the negotiating table with the AMA. Let them know that their attack on family doctors and the medical home is not acceptable.

            COVID-19 Letter to Employers

            ?

            March 13, 2020

            ?

            Dear Employers,

            ?

During this COVID-19 pandemic, we ask for your help in keeping our community safe. One way you can do this is by following Alberta Health precautions. If your staff member meets AHS criteria regarding COVID-19 exposure, you should advise them to self-isolate at home and call 811. If they are experiencing respiratory distress or are severely unwell, they should call 911 immediately.

            ?

Instructing your otherwise healthy, or mildly ill yet concerned staff member to attend a physician’s office to obtain a doctors note or testing to ‘eliminate the possibility’ of COVID-19, unnecessarily exposes our most vulnerable community members to the potential spread of the virus. Testing will not be performed unless a person meets the screening criteria.

            ?

If someone believes they are at risk, they should call 811 and await advice from a clinician. Alternatively, they can CALL their primary care provider’s office for further direction.

            ?

Ridgeview Medical Centre will be screening all calls to determine if patients meet the most current screening criteria set forth by Alberta Health Services. Patients who meet the criteria will be given options to obtain more information (eg. a phone conversation with their family doctor, or continuing to try and contact 811).

            ?

Those who are not sure if they meet the criteria will be advised that the most responsible decision is to self-isolate until they are able to get further direction from 811. Again, if anyone is experiencing respiratory distress or is severely unwell, they should call 911 immediately.

            ?

Ridgeview Medical Centre will not be providing doctor’s notes for patients who meet the criteria to self-isolate; nor will we be seeing otherwise healthy patients to provide doctor’s notes to ‘clear’ them to return to work.

            ?

            Sincerely,

            ?
